In his novel Jaguarman (2020), Raoul de Jong talks about the history of the former Dutch colony of Suriname, from the perspective of one of Raouls ancestors, an enslaved African with the magical power to turn himself into a jaguar. To the world and even to most Dutch people, the history of the natal country of Raoul’s father is largely unknown. Once believed to be the location of the mythical city El Dorado, this small South-American republic was “discovered” by the Spanish, colonized by the French and conquered by the British, who in 1674 traded it with the Dutch for the city that would become known as New York. He was the first Black writer in this 89-year-old tradition to be asked to do so.
